about:
Work
/ Research:
I work with and write about sound, performance and interaction. My work
often makes use of interactive technologies and is focused around
theories of resonance, noise, feedback, embodiment and materialism. I
am currently pursuing research into theories of sonorous individuation
in relation to the work of Gilles Deleuze as part of my PhD study
(under the supervision of Dr. Sally Jane Norman and Dr. Lars Iyer) at Culture Lab,
Newcastle University. My research is focused on the use of sound and
its particular impact upon behaviour within interactive installation
and performance environments. I maintain a blog called beamer where
work in progress, ideas, performance and other things are plotted out.
Music:
I am one of three drummers in the band everybody is
going to die. I perform under my own name doing solo,
improvised electronics. From time to time I perform with ad hoc
ensembles using home made electronics, percussion, found objects and SuperCollider
patches.
Pedagogy:
I teach a post graduate course in Live Electronic Performance at
Newcastle University and run occasional workshops on sound art and
interaction at polytechnic.
Freelance:
Occasionally I undertake freelance work as an interactive systems
designer working with sound, lighting, video and sensor based
interaction for gallery and performance work.
If I
wasn't doing this I'd probably be a baker.
