Music and Machines V
Posted by admin on May 7th, 2007 filed in art, musicBennett and I had lunch with Tao Vrhovec-Sambolec this afternoon. He’s done a lot of lovely work, his Virtual Hole is getting quite famous. He’ll be giving a presentation on his work in Newcastle this Wednesday. If you’re around come along…
Tao Vrhovec-Sambolec is a Sloevenian composer, installation artist and performer currently based in Amsterdam. He will be visiting artist-in-residence in the Music department from the 7th til the 11th May, during which time he will be working with staff, postgrads and undergrads.
Culture Lab and ICMuS will be presenting the fifth of their “Music and Machines” research events on the afternoon of Wednesday 9th May with an open workshop with Tao and Culture Lab residents on sound and the visual arts, involving presentations, discussions and Q&A sessions from 14:30 - 16:00. The themes of the workshop will concern how physical and musical gestures inform and are mediated by technologies, the role of sound awareness in installation works, and the porous boundaries between installation, composition, improvisation and performance. The workshop will be followed by an open research seminar at 16:30 where Tao will present some specific examples of his work, in discussion with Will Schrimshaw and Bennett Hogg, which will be open to the floor.
On the following day, Thursday 10th May,Tao, along with staff and students with whom he has been collaborating, will present a concert of new electroacoustic and improvised work in The Recital Room (near the main entrance to the Armstrong Building) starting at 19:00 and lasting about one hour. Admission is free.
